So I'm 34, no drivers license. Bike and walk everywhere, even during winters. I've always figured I was too lazy to get a dl, but the older I get, the more I realize just how jewed the whole thing is, and it feels like like a massive humiliation ritual instead of "freedom".

In my pozzed nanny state country, they just keep adding bs and steps to get the license. When you take the test, you must know how many grams of CO2 your car produces and globohomo garbage like that. When my dad was a kid in the 70s, you were asked to drive around the block basically. Car + Mc license because why the F not.

After doing all of these steps like a retard, you get to sit in traffic with people from shthole countries who are driving like maniacs.

With my bike, I can have any part replaced in a day. With a car, especially the newer ones, a repair you previously could had done in an afternoon is now a +500 dollar job.

OK, I'll just grab an Uber, bike or take the train. Is it really worth the monthly costs and general hassle? The commute to work is maybe 10-15 minutes of difference. If I get an ebike it would be down to 5. There are multiple times per week where I blow past a 5-10 minute queue.

Also, I bought my current bike back in 2020. It was paid off (assuming cost for public transportation) in 6 months. I've saved roughly 6k in just public transportation fees alone. Car ownership would easily have been 2-3x that.

Learners written test gets you an L license, with this license you can only drive with a person who has 5 years clean driving record in the passenger seat for 6 months if you pay for the state driving course or one year if you don't. If you get 3 infractions your time is arbitrarily extended by decision of an appointed official. Must display L magnet on your car at all times.
After that you must past a road test to get your N license for a period of 2 years. With N license you are only allowed 1 extra passenger, cannot have any blood alcohol level. Again, 3 strikes and you're license is taken away for an arbitrary period of time by an official and you must start the 2 year period over again. Must display N magnet on your car at all times.
After that you must pay for a 3rd time to take another road test upon which you have your full license.

It's an independence and convenience thing more than anything. Let's say I want to go to the next town over and it's a 6 hour bike ride. I can just hop in my car and go there. As long as my car is insured, gassed up and well maintained I can do this instantaneously. Without a car, I have to do the logistical part of booking a bus, a train, or scheduling my time differently. It's the same for anything. Let's say I'm working on my gutters and I drop my screwdriver down the drainage. I don't now have to wait until tomorrow to catch the bus, bike half way across town to the hardware store that closes in 30 minutes. I just hop in my car and I'm there an back in 50 minutes. Being able to drive a car is extremely efficient in your personal life. People say "freedom", but what they mean by that is independence (being self reliant for transportation rather than on transportation workers) and convenience (being able to work within your own time schedule).

Petrol is extremely expensive in the UK, then there is road tax, insurance etc.

I mostly bike everywhere. It actually takes less time for moving in a city, because you avoid the traffic and the time for parking. I feel more free with the wind in my face and I love the speed. I bike to work whatever the weather as well.
