"Saltpeter" is KNO3. KNO3 can be used with car battery acid to make HNO3. HNO3 is nitric acid. HNO3 can be used to make pretty much any type of kaboomy stuff that you want. Or you can use KNO3 to make black powder if you're a midwit.

It's difficult to buy HNO3 directly any more because the government doesn't like people to have that. And as I mentioned above, I haven't been able to find KNO3 anywhere in recent years anyway. FFS, I'm not even sure you can buy sulfuric acid at auto parts stores any more either, but you can at least buy it at chemistry supply shops for doing anodizing.
