Ok I won't doubt your expertise, but I thought that the corn only came into the picture with the "finishing." I thought all cows are fed grass for most of their life, and the corn only comes into the picture when they want to fatten them up and marble them for the "finishing." This is what I remember from researching it. My boss has a hobby farm and I think he only feeds them hay, but that's about as much as my experience, besides I work on a lot of farm land surveying for wind farms and shit so I'm always hanging out with cows.
