You incur over half your life time medical costs in the last year of your life. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, your race, or your gender. You're pretty much fine until suddenly you aren't. Health insurance companies would just cover you until a year before your life expectancy age then drop you preemptively, so the only way to make sure health care is available for the elderly is through a universal government run program. Everything else should be on you to take care of yourself.
