They also get a rough idea what kind of stuff you're running during different times of day. They can also very easily and remotely switch your power off. Mine got switched out for half a day due to a clerical error, no human being made the decision, just automatically switched it off and would have switched it back on 12 hours later had I not called. There were plans years ago for a device 220v that placed over the meter and turned it on , one time use ,and it would permanently damage the meter and slow it down , sometimes with a noticeable wobble in the meter wheel.
Theoretically you would have your sub-panel hooked up to your tap wire wires , then place your tap device on the hot utility wires , install your tap wires , then tighten the tap device. You have power !
The hardest part is hiding your tap splice , in a residential house , you would cut a hole in the ceiling right next to the heavy steal conduit from the pole / power supply , carefully use grinder , cut slot in conduit, pull out small wire loop ( both legs or just one ) with a come along and attach your taps. This is illegal and dangerous for the careless or stupid. So don’t do it!

You need to let us have access to meter to read it.
If you keep the gate locked or always have a dog that prevents us from reading it, then we will swap you to the regular smart meter.

I worked for power company for years and I promise you they are the slowest, most traditional, old school corporations in existance. Also, pot growers used to steal TONS of power before these smart meters came out.

All you need to do to disconnect from the grid is turn off the main breaker in the breaker box. If you are planning on running your home on a generator, it's important to do this before you fire up the generator. You should probably get an interlock installed that will prevent both of them from being connected at the same time.
I live in an area that regularly has bad storms that knock out the power and a lot of people here have generators. Every time this happens, there are always people who forget to do this and end up pumping electricity back through the main breaker and into the grid, zapping linemen working on it and fucking up repairs.

I worked with Landys&Gyr/Siemens/Mitsubishi/|tron meters. the meters usually detect phase changes, voltage drops and has anti tamper devices like circuit sensors and gyroscope for tilt tampering. I suppose the electronics board would be susceptible to to any emp like any other board, they aren't enclosed in a faraday cladding or anything. faults are automatically relayed and the log can be traced back to the "last gasp" message. just getting a lost "heartbeat" would trigger someone to physically go check the meter installation. I mainly worked on the software side but got to touch physical stuff from ed to time to time.
