FPV drones with radio/wireless communication are far too susceptible to jamming. You cant jam FPV drones with fiber optic cables. You get high FPS, HD footage while having no problems with controlling the drone.

A bunch of drones with laser comms with a final wide beam would get around any jamming too.
Yeah, your intermediate wide-beam drone could get spotted a mile away, but the ones a layer away from that much harder, and the ones away from that even harder still, and so on.
Jamming light based comms can be done, but if you use a redundant grid at very wide angles, so much harder, to the point you'd need to be miles away in either direction, or right the fuck next to the drone in question.

Laser link would work well, but having a laser relay station would be a static target susceptible to counter attack. It also adds an additional point of logistical complexity to drone deployment. If you are in a trench do you want to deploy your laser relay station which can be attacked by other drones or weapons, before sending out the attack drones, or would you rather quickly deploy a single drone directly to your target at a moments notice?
This is a somewhat scrappy war, the laser relay drones would be a better long term weapons platform, but would require more logistics and training to support, whereas fiber link is just a single package you can send to a front line troop and they can have it ready to strike a target in 5 minutes.
