I used to listen to Penn's podcast, Penn's Sunday School, from 2012 to 2017. Something like 300 episodes at 1-2 hours each, which is to say a long fucking time.
Penn really was a Ron Paul libertarian, until he ended up with Trump Derangement Syndrome.
It happened pretty slowly over time, and it was a result of an incident while he was on Celebrity Apprentice in 2012. At some point during that show, he, unprompted, made a joke attacking Trump's hair, to his face, I think he said it "looks like cotton candy made of piss". Trump was offended, and Penn refused to apologize. From that point onward, Trump personally hated Penn, apparently he was on Trump's "enemy list" from that point on.
When the 2016 election started getting into swing, Penn really didn't like any of the candidates, and joked that Trump might actually be the least bad option, if only because he'd probably not really do anything while in office, which would be a good thing since the Fed Gov never does anything right anyway.
Being tangentially adjacent to Hollywood for most of his life, he had a lot of ultra-leftist friends, and while he would often argue with them politically, he tended to just agree to disagree. By the time Trump's campaign started looking really solid, his leftist friends started swaying him into actively hating Trump, which wasn't really difficult since Trump hated him, too. Over the course of a couple of years, his leftist friends started swaying his political positions as a whole, until eventually they alienated his moderate and right-wing friends. Stuck in a leftist echo chamber, he eventually disavowed his strong Libertarian convictions, and slowly morphed into a bog-standard libshit.
It was a shame to watch.
