A widespread power outage struck Spain and neighboring regions in France and Portugal, according to local media sources on Monday.

"At around 12:30 pm this Monday, the lights in homes, businesses and stores across the country went out. Gradually, users have also begun to report problems accessing data and Wi-Fi on their cell phones," local paper La Vanguardia wrote.

Public transportation has halted, metro services are suspended, businesses are closing their doors and public vehicles are immobilized due to non-functioning traffic signals. Currently, authorities have not identified the reason for the blackout.

The only thing that would cause nation wide outages is system overload from override commands given from the central control (hacking or violent takeover of control centre), a storm or natural disaster covering the entire country, or… zero day software or hardware exploits integrated into the entire system. Another interesting tid bit. Spain and Portugal are well developed European countries but their economic output is relatively low, for Europe especially. If there was anywhere to test the public’s reaction to a cyber attack against the grid it would be there as economics damage would be limited, unlike Berlin or Paris or London. If it was the Russians they would seek to overcome these cities over Madrid and Lisbon. So, our guys testing: war gaming cyber blackout in Europe or Russians making a threat. Firstly there are safeties in place. Secondly they aren’t silver bullet measures, they can be countered. Especially over a decade with the right people getting hired or compromised to then go and compromise the system. Thirdly, yes it is retarded. Most European states have sold their critical infrastructure contracts to private entities. Far less oversight and vetting. Corners cut because profits are the goal not security. It’s a corrupt industry with plenty of exploits. These exploits exist, they just aren’t used because they’re a one off trick. Once they’re used years of intelligence work goes down the drain. They’re saved for the perfect moment. Trust me, you should not feel safe.
