Let's say we were in a post-scarcity future, like Star Trek. What material goods does a human really need to be happy?
1) Clothes
2) Water/Food
3) Basic utilities
4) A house
5) Safety

Beyond that, humans really don't need anything. Straight up.
You could substitute the online entertainment with actual-experiences. Travel, games, meeting people.

Our society is geared up to produce a vast glut of consumer products, for which people don't really need. The need must be "created" in people, through the use of advertisements. Which requires a big advertising industry, and an entire culture of overconsumption. It's actually unhealthy, and unnecessary.
Furthermore, I actually do think it's a waste of scarce resources. If people just had what they needed, we could divert a greater majority of resources into scientific/technological advancement, and be light years ahead of where we are today. Also, creating experiences for people that aren't in the virtual world. A theme park in every town. People building monuments, and pathways, and interesting things to visit, that's a great use of labor.

There's basically 2 ways to go when work becomes scarce
1) Paying people money (UBI)
2) Creating work for people
Although I think you need a bit of both, I strongly prefer option 2 for various reasons.
For one, it keeps the gene pool competitive. If people work, then they need to keep themselves disciplined, and there's a mating-heirarchy that keeps the gene pool anchored.
If instead, people are given resources for nothing, they just become fat lazy slobs, and the gene pool degenerates, and it becomes a dystopia. Sure you can maintain it for a generation, maybe 2 or 3, but it's a society in decline.

The cool thing is, when you create work by restricting technologies, you have great liberty on how you can go about doing so. The technologies you choose to restrict can lead to an extremely diverse range of societies. We can even craft societies to our liking. Like we can establish a river-fishing society, or a pirate society on the high seas, or a medieval castle soceity....whatever. We can also go full techno-barbarian...it's up to us. This can be a world with a diverse range of cultures. This is such an appealing concept to me.

In general, we are going to slowly transition society away from "producing goods/services" to instead "producing people". There will be economic-focused areas, in the big cities. But outside of that, there will be cultural areas, established to produce people of a particular quality. These societies must be traditional, we are manufacturing people of a particular culture, beliefset, education...etc.
