Your confidence is misplaced. The primary lesson Trump learned between administrations is that he was tired of smart people telling him truth. He didn't want to be overly burdened by rigorous thought, expertise, historical context, etc. What he wanted was a group of people who do exactly what he says, when he says it, and gives him a big YES SIR as they about-face and march to do his bidding. The safeties are off in this administration. No one is going to tell him what the smart thing to do is -- they're just going to tell him that his idea is smart.

He has the perfect amount of "I don't fucking care" to shake up the power structures and e.g. get money out of politics, kill gerrymandering, etc. Regardless of how good or bad these examples might be, the sun is probably setting on an opportunity to fight to disentrench the rein-holders of an increasingly captured system of government.
That might be the real tragedy here: not necessarily the odious, amoral profiteering and vengeance of a mentally ill narcissist (although that sucks a lot), but the fact that after Trump passes, we're going to be forced to eventually formalize controls on executive power which could have been used by a Trumplike figure to do things America actually needs done.
