I passed the test, but I didn't get a waiver because I has a highschool equivalency and not a highschool diploma. But from what I've seen, you can get royally fucked by accepting the bonus. The navy can put you on shore duty and if you're on it too long, you lose your contract, which basically makes you pay back the 100k bonus, you won't get the taxes back either. I had a guy in my sonar class get caught sleeping on a submarine and his life was essentially destroyed. Subs are also extremely competitive, but I don't know if I can speak about the details, it's better to say avoid it. He had to be rerated, but he already had his dolphins in BESS.

You're better off on surface fleet getting billets that give you promotions.

I chose to go undesignated instead of serving on subs because I fucked up an electronics test for submarines and honestly it was a blessing. They did give me a choice of going MMA, but I orders to San Diego, so I took it. I now have VA benefits for life, free schooling, and a ton of benefits from California because I paid my taxes there when I was in. I never ranked up, but I can get a nuclear degree for almost nothing (15k in state) in California so yeah. I am aiming for industrial automation, then electrical engineering, but a ton of trade degrees too. California is great if you know how to work the system. Nuclear may become profitable, but I wouldn't do the Navy route, most of the guys get out and become doctors, but that life is miserable and you'd could just make more money starting a business.
