Be careful in more modern cars in the USA this will likely not work for your front windows, only your rear ones. Due to rollover safety laws from the last decade most of your front side windows are now laminated and not tempered glass.

If you dont get the door open before the water stops you, you can wait until the inside of the car is filled with enough water to equalise the pressure. After that you can once again open the door and swim out. Better yet, try stabbing the corner of the windshield with a key or headrest to shatter the windshield as an additional escape option

Pressure holds the door shut until the interior is also filled with water, yes.
Same with prssure against the windows, although it is perpendicular pressure so not as damning. But, enough sideways pressure can make them not want to roll up or down, though unless you lose power immediately you should have plenty of time to roll them down before it gets that high. Hand crank windows are safer in this regard and could make a difference. I also imagine you could apply more force manually than the electric window motor and overpower the pressure, at least better than the electric could, but I'm not certain. Anyway, he probably didnt even lose power too quick, just panicked and didnt do it. Or he did b/c shitty bug car.
