Few people understand how dangerous this situation is, nor do they realise who allowed this to happen: the Queen. Queen Elizabeth II the Stupid was, by quite a large margin, the most destructive and terrible ruler we have ever had in her history (save for Charles Iqbal III al-Windsor), simply because she so misunderstood her role that she dismantled literally every constitutional protection we had against tyranny. The Men in Grey Suits convinced her she was supposed to do that.
Our constitution isn’t written down, but is instead made of various conventions, traditions and legal precedents that dictate the kind of things that the various named positions of power can and cannot do. Not a single modern position, not even Prime Minister, actually has any constitutional basis, other than the history of the office itself. The monarch, traditionally, picked these positions. This even extended to the party leaders. Politicians were kept in line because, legally, they had no right to actually do anything unless acting on behalf of The Crown.
Bad Queen Liz accidentally abolished all of this. She allowed the parties to choose their own leaders, ministers, define their own roles, and even (for a time) gave away her ability to dissolve parliament. She allowed Blair to gut the Lords and create a Supreme Court packed with activists, she allowed Blair to create an Electoral Commission that decides who and who isn’t allowed to take part in elections, and, by never once exercising her power like she was supposed to, established the dumbass precedent that the monarch has “the right to warn”.
Unfortunately, constitutionally, the power of the monarch is still very much alive and well, in the nebulous entity known as The Crown. With the power of the monarch thoroughly eroded, The Crown is completely and utterly unchecked. Politicians who wield that power have absolute authority to do anything. And there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do about.
