The truth is somewhere in between, and some manufacturing will return, but most probably wont. And frankly, I dont even think the Trump admin is serious about any of this. I think all of this is about something else all together.

Because :
1. Americans dont want to work in factories.
2. People wont buy as much domestic goods if it is super expensive (which it will be compared to chink plastic).
3. Tariffs will stifle innovation, so domestic stuff will be worse as there wont really be any competition.
4.The government has no policies or frameworks to bring manufacturing back, other than handing the responsibility to the free market for about 4 years until Trump is out of office again.

Doesnt sound like a long term plan to me. I think the speculation that this will mostly impact manufacturing for apple and other companies where the factories will be robots is a good one. Because the american worker is just too expensive for slave labor which they are used to in china - and like mentioned, noone wants a factory job in the US.

Manufacturing jobs means a supply chain that can easily be reset for war. The long term objective is to beat China in a war of attrition in Asia. Obviously this is insane because China's manufacturing lead is insurmountable in less than 100 years, but that's the target.
