There is a necessary social compromise in the old world that was lost during the sexual revolution and again with the rise of birth control. This has resulted in generations of overworked, single childless and bitter cat ladies who use their jobs as a replacement for healthy family structures and view men as competitors for their paychecks rather than as future spouses.

Technicaly it depends. but by XIIth century the anwser is yes. And I am speaking western/central europe. In eastern europe serfs never had rights. Their difference to a slave was in name only.
