Then the $300 on top of that is called "window dues" and you have to pay it however frequently (I'm assuming the $300 is for the year here) to remain a member in good standing. The pensions are in bad shape for 3 main reasons.

1. During the "good times" in the 90s-2000s they had so much money in their pensions instead of decreasing their assumed ROI they increased benefits. The reason this happened is government essentially told them they can't have all the excess money available. Then when a downturn hit (00 crash) they have a ton of new promises they now have to keep (by law) and a giant hole they have to come out of just to break even.

2. As a result of #1 union wage increases have gone towards their benefits (the underfunded pension), healthcare, and other benefits, resulting in lower pay increases. This means non-union can undercut the union by simply putting more on the check and giving similar benefits.

3. Because of this and telling 1.5 generations that the trades are for dumb retards everyone has gone to college. As a result unions have been shrinking membership wise which means issues #1 and 2 become much worse.

A few might fail in 10 years but pensions CAN have cuts made to them under MEPRA but they must be "criticial and declining" which means pennies on the dollar could be paid out to pensioners but the pension will still exist. There is also a fund the federal gov has that is a stopgap for failed pensions but that is criticially underfunded too and is estimated to only pay out about $0.10/$1.00 promised. There is also pension plan bailouts the government has done as recent as a few years ago.

In this "bailout" the gov basically dictates what your fund is invested in and you have to pay back the "bailout". I think a few plans (teamsters) have taken these cashflow injections.

My point being pensions will exist overall they might just become more of a shadow of their promises.
