Rust is a fucking mess. We do development for embedded devices and most of our stuff is in plain C with some assembly. Now C has its own issues but its flexible, powerful, efficient, consistent and works on every platform
We have just bid on and won a decent sized project and after everything was signed they came back and said we want it in Rust not C because our CEO read an article that told him its the future so I had to dig in to Rust and train a few others. Now it has some nice features (cargo) but its clearly some half finished hipster project developed by school kids. I say developed not designed because there is clearly no consistent or coherent design around that fucking mess. Its just been thrown together by different people who did different things in different ways

The Rust hype seems to be largely propped up by former javascript webshitters that tried something other than javascript for the first time. Cargo / built in testing is nice and the functional-lite approach is interesting but it still doesn't feel natural to code in unlike C. I work in C++/Matlab/Fortran simulation nightmare codebases professionally and just use Rust for personal stuff so I haven't hit any terrible borrow checker issues yet. I want to try out zig but it seems like it's still too early in development to bother learning.

I've worked with several real world projects that used this crap and what starts out as a bunch of wankery about how it's going to be so much nicer because we have typing. Faggots who use languages like Java and C# feel a sense of familiarity and repeat all the same bad habits in those languages. It actually gets worse because when push comes to shove, on real projects, people start to cut corners and start casting things to any or use unknown as T and force it to a given type. Completely negating the supposed benefits of typing in the first place. So what you're left with is ultimately the worst of both worlds. I've yet to see a project which gets to say 20k LoC or more that doesn't take these kind of shortcuts. The end result is a kind of frankenstein which nobody will admit was a mistake and what was supposed to be a shiny new project already has a bunch of technical debt. People are too busy wasting time arguing about which new framework they should use for the next project. It's all so tiresome.
